Trainee Site Engineer
About the Role
Grounds and Services Limited (GSL) is based in Hornby, Christchurch and has been providing landscape, grounds maintenance, civil construction and roading maintenance services for the past 25 years. We specialise in turf maintenance and earthwork construction, especially in wetland areas. Over the past three years we have completed several storm water basin projects for the Christchurch City Council and continue to have a heavy presence in this space. Our civil construction division have a highly experienced team that complete a wide scope of projects, from commercial concrete and asphalt car parks, kerb and channelling, roading, and the construction of footpaths, driveways and concrete structures.
GSL also offer a diverse range of services such as roadside mowing and chemical spraying, traffic management, high profile amenity maintenance, NOC roading maintenance and landscaping. GSL primarily operates in the Canterbury area, with existing grounds and roading maintenance contracts extending from the Kaikoura Coast in the North to the Waitaki River in the South and West to the Southern Alps.
Our extensive range of plant and equipment is supplemented by our transportation fleet to get the resources to where they need to go. Our large, certified mechanical workshop ensures the fleet is regularly serviced and maintained.

Business is booming with plenty of forward work in the pipeline. We are seeking a Trainee Site Engineer to join our civil construction team and assist the Survey Technician and Site Engineers with a variety of activities. Some of these tasks include site surveying, grounds testing and preparation of reports that support the delivery of quality projects on time and on budget to customer specifications.
Your days will be busy as you will also assist with volume capture surveys, liaise with sub-contractors, and provide interpretation of construction drawings and specifications. The varied nature of our business will provide the opportunity to be involved in and gain hands-on experience across a wide variety of tasks. You will take pride in your high standard of work, have the ability to gel with our team and be prepared to get stuck in and complete whatever tasks are required.
This position would suit a recent graduate who is motivated to learn about the civil construction industry, or who has some agricultural experience, and is willing to turn their hand to anything, including general labouring. Training to complement your transferable skills will be provided as GSL provides an environment of personal development and formal training to ensure you remain upskilled in a company that continues to grow and expand.
Assist with site surveying and grounds testing
Process data, make calculations and assist with the preparation of reports and as-built information
Assist with construction and open spaces maintenance labourer activities
What you’ll bring:
NCEA Level 3, tertiary education or university degree is essential (industry qualification in civil construction, survey or earthworks preferred)
Previous experience in a similar role or within the civil construction industry is advantageous
Experience using current Microsoft Office, 12D, AutoCAD and large machinery is useful
Current Full NZ Drivers Licence essential (WTR preferable, but not essential)
Self-motivated and adaptable, with the ability to work autonomously
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
A passion for working in an environmentally sustainable workplace
Willing to work away from the home base as required
