About Us

Grounds and Services Limited (GSL) is based in Hornby, Christchurch and has been providing landscape, grounds maintenance, civil construction, and roading maintenance services for the past 25 years. We specialise in turf maintenance and earthwork construction, especially in wetland areas.

Over the past three years we have completed several stormwater basin projects for the Christchurch City Council and continue to have a heavy presence in this space. Our civil construction division have a highly experienced team that complete a wide scope of projects, from commercial concrete and asphalt car parks, kerb and channelling, roading, and the construction of footpaths, driveways and concrete structures.

GSL also offer a diverse range of services such as roadside mowing and chemical spraying, traffic management, high profile amenity maintenance, NOC roading maintenance and landscaping. GSL primarily operates in the Canterbury area, with existing grounds and roading maintenance contracts extending from the Kaikoura Coast in the North to the Waitaki River in the South and West to the Southern Alps.

Our extensive range of plant and equipment is supplemented by our transportation fleet to get the resources to where they need to go. Our large, certified mechanical workshop ensures the fleet is regularly serviced and maintained.

The Opportunity

As a trainee in our Open Spaces division, your days will be busy working towards completing your Registered Chemical Applicator qualification, with the support and guidance of our team of qualified industry experts.

Your key duties will include:
• Proactively undertake and complete all relevant training required
• Learning different types of chemical control works in a safe environment
• Gaining practical spraying experience according to horticultural standards
• Performing other grounds maintenance activities such as mowing, weedeating, and planting
• Maintaining a co-operative relationship with team members across different areas of the business

To fully understand the business and deliver a high standard of service, you will get the opportunity to work with teams from our Construction, Landscaping, and Mechanical divisions. Flexibility and adaptability will be required to assist with spraying and grounds maintenance activities at various sites including roadsides, sidewalks, lawns, verges, and berms. The option of night shifts and away work will include the appropriate allowances as we have contracts in different areas in and around Canterbury.

This role is best suited for those that share our love for the outdoors, with the willingness to carry out duties in varying weather conditions, properly utilising the correct PPE supplied.

What You'll Bring

• Full Class 1 NZ Driver Licence (Restricted Licence acceptable)
• Previous experience in grounds maintenance advantageous
• Good physical health to carry out relevant labour activities as required
• Strong ability to follow instructions, meet deadlines, and work well autonomously
• Ability to accurately complete work reports, documentation, and daily job records
