About Us

Grounds and Services Limited (GSL) is a privately owned company based in Hornby, Christchurch and has been providing Grounds Maintenance, Civil Construction and Landscaping services in and around Canterbury for the past 25 years.

Our Open Spaces division offers a diverse range of services including roadside mowing, chemical spraying, pest plant control, soft landscaping, mass native planting and hydro seeding, as well as high amenity sports turf maintenance. We provide traffic management for NZTA and local authority contracts and roading maintenance through NZTA’s NOC maintenance contracts.

Our Construction division specialises in earthworks, civil construction and landscaping, especially in wetland areas. We have recently completed multiple land drainage projects for the Christchurch City Council in Wigram and Halswell.

Additionally, GSL is an approved MPI Biosecurity response contractor and has assisted in a number of biosecurity responses throughout New Zealand. We have an extensive range of plant and equipment which is supplemented by our transportation fleet to get the resources to where they need to go, and our large, certified workshop ensures the fleet is regularly serviced and maintained.

The Opportunity

As the H&S Officer you will be passionate about having an operational and pragmatic approach to H&S and embed yourself into supporting and guiding our business on safety culture objectives and improvements. Ideally you will have a background working in a civil construction, agriculture or horticulture environment. This is a pivotal hands-on role, so you will advise and provide practical guidance to all levels of the business from operational field teams to the management team. This may involve facilitating training sessions, toolbox talks and inductions, as well as incident and hazard management, corrective action implementation and reviewing safe work practices.

Self-motivation with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, is an important part of the role as well as having the ability to prioritise multiple demands.

You will be a natural collaborator and exceptional communicator who displays sound judgement, investigative and decision-making skills. You will understand and listen to varying customer requirements, be highly people focused and provide the necessary leadership and guidance to the Health and Safety Worker Committee.

What You'll Bring

• Appropriate industry or tertiary qualification
• 3+ years operational experience and knowledge of HSE practices in civil construction, agriculture or horticulture field sites
• Strong knowledge of the ISO 45001 standard
• Strong operational, pragmatic focus and solution mindset
• Ability to motivate, inspire and influence others across all levels of the business
• Sound literacy in current Microsoft Office and other products
• Sound experience in facilitation and training with the ability to engage an audience
• Self-motivation and flexibility, with the ability to work autonomously
