Grounds and Services Limited (GSL) is a privately owned company based in Hornby, Christchurch and has been providing Grounds Maintenance, Civil Construction and Landscaping services in and around Canterbury for the past 25 years.
Our Open Spaces division offers a diverse range of services for different contracts across Canterbury such as Highway Roadside Maintenance for NZTA NOC Contracts, which include mowing, chemical spraying, pest plant control, and landscaping activities supported by our Traffic Management Team; Grounds Amenity Maintenance for universities, schools, and local businesses; Sports Turf Installation and Maintenance for Canterbury Rugby Union and NZ Cricket; Hydroseeding and large-scale wetland planting across our civil construction projects.
Our Civil Construction Team is growing its project repertoire and capacity having established a reputation for successfully delivered projects for earthworks, drainage, roading, sports fields, concrete structures and the construction of stormwater treatment facilities, waterway enhancements and drainage improvements.
Our Mechanical Workshop extensively supports all areas of the business and external clients with services including the repair and maintenance of our vehicles and machinery, welding, and fabrication.
As the H&S Manager you will be passionate about having an operational and pragmatic approach to H&S and embed yourself into identifying, implementing and guiding our business on safety culture objectives and improvements. Ideally you will have a background working in a civil construction, agriculture, or horticulture environment. This is a pivotal hands-on role, so you will advise and provide practical guidance to all levels of the business from operational field teams to the management team. This will involve facilitating training sessions, toolbox talks and inductions, as well as incident and hazard management, corrective action implementation and reviewing safe work practices. You will also provide operational management and support to ensure environmental measures are monitored and maintained.

You will understand and listen to varying customer requirements, be highly people focused and provide the necessary leadership and guidance to the Health and Safety Worker Committee.
What You'll Bring
• Appropriate industry or tertiary qualification
• 3+ years operational experience and knowledge of HSE practices in civil construction, agriculture or horticulture field sites
• Strong knowledge of the ISO 45001 standard
• Strong operational, pragmatic focus and solution mindset
• Ability to motivate, inspire and influence others across all levels of the business
• Sound literacy in current Microsoft Office and 365 products
• Sound experience in facilitation and training with the ability to engage an audience
• Self-motivation and flexibility, with the ability to work autonomously
